KTVX ABC4

Nexstar Broadcasting Group purchased KTVX-TV, an ABC affiliate, from Newport Broadcasting on December 3, 2012.

ABC4 is the first privately owned commercial television station in the United States, officially signing on the air April 19, 1948, at 8 p.m. as KDYL-TV, after first starting television demonstrations at the Paris Department Store in Salt Lake City in 1939 using portions of exhibit used by RCA TV in the 1939 World’s Fair. 

ABC4 had many “firsts” over the years. In 1953 and 1954, Dr. Robert Warner of Salt Lake City initiated the nation’s first series of open-circuit continuing medical education clinics via KDYL-TV. In 1999, ABC4 was the first television in Utah to “flip the switch” and broadcast a digital signal. On April 26, 2010, KTVX began broadcasting news in full high definition with an HD-quality news set. 

ABC4 airs 45 hours of locally-produced programming every week; 2,340 hours of locally-produced programming annually, including the first Utah lifestyle program, Good Things Utah (M-F, 9-11 a.m.), and Utah’s #1 Political Program, Inside Utah Politics (Sundays at 8 a.m.). ABC4Utah news provides Utahns with the most accurate weather for over 10 consecutive years.

Combined with Nexstar’s KUCW/CW30, ABC4/KTVX, and not counting the special ABC4 News programming and Town Halls ABC4 News produces each year, the two stations air over 3,120 hours of locally produced programming annually.

KUCW Utah’s CW30

Nexstar Broadcasting Group purchased KUCW-TV, a CW affiliate, from Newport Broadcasting on December 3, 2012.

Utah’s CW30 (KUCW) is the CW television affiliate serving the Salt Lake City television market. CW30 also provides Utahns daily local news, airing ABC4’s Good Morning Utah M-F 5-7 a.m. and ABC4News at 7 p.m. M-F 7-8 p.m. and 780 hours of locally produced programming annually.  CW30 is the home to all of CW’s top programs, including: Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Walker, and DC’s Stargirl.

Utah’s CW 30 prime-time programming consistently ranks among the top affiliates in the country in the network’s W18-34 demo.  In addition, CW30 has the strongest comedy programming available, including; The Big Bang Theory, Last Man Standing, Two and A Half Men, The Goldbergs and black-ish, as well as Tamron Hall, Sherri Shepherd, and Jennifer Hudson

Salt Lake City TV Market

Salt Lake City, UT is in the 29th largest DMA in the United States, with a population of approximately 3,282,115 and 952,470 television households, as reported by Nielsen Media.

Cable/ADS penetration in the market is estimated to be 32% Cable, and 43% ADS. Utah has the YOUNGEST median age in the country (30.5 years) with the next youngest states’ median age being Alaska and District of Columbia, with a median age of 33.9 years and the U.S. median age 37.7. Utah also has the highest HH size (3.12) in the U.S. (2.64), with 60.6% of HH headed by married couples vs U.S. average of 48.1%.

Utah has the number 2 state economy in the U.S., according to a report published in 2018 by WalletHub, and has the #2 highest median annual household income. Utah is also one of the fastest-growing tech hubs in the country, with three cities – Provo, Ogden, and Salt Lake City – among the top 15 in the country with the highest concentration of STEM sector employment, and the New Yorker declared the Beehive State “the next Silicon Valley”. With software company Novell leading the charge, Utah has begun attracting major players like digital storage company EMC Corp. and eBay, with both Provo and SLC now home to Google Fiber.

In addition, record amounts of venture capital flowing in, and is home to at least a half-dozen unicorns (companies valued at $1 billion or more).
